Wedding Cake Trends of 2012

The overarching theme for this year is understated elegance.  The focus is on the sophisticated detailing and choice of colours for the cakes. Let ModernRani serve as your guide to the latest wedding cake trends:

Macaroon Towers
Goodbye cupcake towers – hello macaroons! Remember our past feature on macaroons.
These tiny bite-size morsels pack punch and flavour.  They can be easily customized to match any wedding theme.

This pretty in pink macaroon tower by Cake Opera is SIMPLY AMAZING!! Make sure you check them out for their fabulous cakes and cupcakes as well:

Ruffles
Ruffled flowers and detailing have become a popular trend this year, one that brides have increasingly wanted for their wedding cakes! Ruffles add such great texture and depth to any cake when done right!

Ombre
This simple concept has hit the world by storm in various facets of design and fashion. Basically, ombre means any cake that shows a gradual gradation of a colour. This is then accessorized with other cake elements such as flowers or bows.

Cascading Flowers
A big trend with wedding flowers is to have it cascade down multiple tiers along the center.  The key for it to look modern instead of grandma’s wedding cake is to have flowers of varying textures, colours, and size – and don’t forget the ruffles!

Vintage
Damask and classic vintage prints never go out of style.  Vintage doesn’t have to mean colourless, plain and boring!
